Brad Wright on ‘Stargate Universe’: ‘We haven’t given up’
Be of good cheer this holiday season, “Stargate Universe” fans. Syfy may not have shot down the Destiny just yet.
“We haven’t given up on finishing the story we started,” executive producer and series co-creator Brad Wright said via email Thursday.
On Dec. 16, Syfy confirmed on Twitter that it wouldn’t pick up “SGU” for a third season. (It is set to air the remaining 10 episodes of Season 2 in spring 2011.) The “Stargate” franchise helped turn Syfy, then Sci Fi, into a cable network player when “SG-1” moved to the network in 2002.
Wright was on a trip when he heard about the cancellation, but since returning he has been exploring options for continuing the series in some form. He and officials at franchise owner MGM have been discussing several options, he said, and he’s thankful for fan support.
“It’s heartening to see so many people upset about Syfy’s cancellation of the show,” he wrote, “but it’s important to remember that their license fee represented only a portion of our total budget.”
Now, before you get on Twitter to falsely declare that the franchise is saved, read this paragraph carefully. This news does not mean any plan or timetable has been created for the revival of either “SGU” or the “Stargate” franchise, or any deal has been struck with a network. It simply means that the parties are looking into a lot of possibilities, but much work remains to be done before we can celebrate.
So be patient, keep the faith, continue campaigning for the show’s return and be sure to watch the final 10 episodes of “Stargate Universe” Season 2 live on Syfy. (For other ideas, check out this article from Joseph Dilworth at Pop Culture Zoo.)
It’s a sad sad sad day for Stargate
It has been officially announced that Stargate Universe won’t be renewed for a third season by the people who seem to consider wrestling as Sci-Fi.
@SyFy now officially sucks. Well, I should have expected that. SyFy’s parent company is NBC. You know, the last place network?
MGM. You suck too.

Here’s hoping for some Christmas miracle.
Yes, I am pissed.

Eli Wallace may have the raw talent Dr. Rush never had, but his motivation for anything aside from video games and cereal was at record lows before stepping aboard the Destiny. Now he must push his wunderkid genius to the level of Rush’s experience while dishing advice to Chloe, working on his open ended Kino documentary and being the resident sci-fi pop culture guru.
But as it happens, David Blue wanted to be Big Bird before wanting to be Eli Wallace:
I’m a trained triple-threat. And as much as I love my acting career, sometimes I miss singing and dancing.
My favorite class in college was Humanities. I loved learning about different cultures, religions and histories.
I went to Space Camp.
The first full song I ever taught myself on piano was Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel”.
I hang up photos of my friends everywhere in my set trailer to make me feel at home.
My favorite board game is Stratego.
The first thing I ever wanted to be as a kid was Big Bird. I was heartbroken when my parents reminded me I couldn’t be him, because there already was one.
I used to collect TV Guide’s that had my favorite shows on the cover. I had an entire drawer full of them.
I was obsessed with LEGOs as a kid. I had a million of them and built entire worlds… then proceeded to destroy them.
When I was young, I’d beg my parents every week to let me stay up to watch Saturday Night Live. They eventually got tired of me bugging them and one night said if I “could stay awake until it started, I could watch.” I fell asleep at 10PM.

MGM Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
MGM officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today to set in motion its pre-packaged reorganization plan:
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. (“MGM”) today announced that it and approximately 160 of its affiliates have filed Chapter 11 cases in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York (the “Court”) to seek confirmation of their “pre-packaged” plan of reorganization (“Plan”).
MGM has sufficient cash on hand, and the consent of its lenders to use this cash, to fund normal business operations throughout the Chapter 11 process. MGM has filed “first-day” motions seeking immediate Court approval to continue paying its employees, vendors, participants, guilds and licensors in the ordinary course of business during the entire Chapter 11 process, for both pre-petition and post-petition obligations. MGM anticipates that the Plan will be confirmed by the Court in approximately 30 days.
As previously announced on October 29, 2010, MGM’s secured lenders, voting in the Company’s solicitation process, overwhelmingly approved the proposed plan of reorganization. After considering a range of strategic alternatives over the course of the last 15 months, MGM and its secured lenders determined this plan will allow the Company to emerge as a stable enterprise with new leadership at the helm to move MGM forward.
The Plan provides for the Company’s secured lenders to exchange more than $4 billion in outstanding debt for most of the equity in MGM upon its emergence from Chapter 11.
